Hot Process Soap Versus Cold Process Soap
The two main processes for making soap is hot process soap and cold process soap. But when it comes to Hot Process Soap Versus Cold Process Soap, it is a matter of preference. There are even hybrid processes, such as cold process oven processed soaps. Each process has its pros and cons, so today we are going to go over some of these pros and cons.
Cold Process Soap
With cold process soap, the soap does not go through a gel phase. Because of this, there are some benefits to using this process. These benefits include:
- Brighter Colors
- Easy to use batter
- Scents last longer
- Creamy texture

While these are great benefits to cold process soap, there are some down falls to using this process. With cold process, if the batter is too warm, you run the risk of a partial gel. While this does not effect soap in any bad way, it is just not as pretty. There are ways to fix a partially gelled soap, but it does have to be caught quickly to fix it. Other cons include:
- Takes longer to saponify
- Longer cure time
- Does not last as long as harder, hot process bars
- High risk of partially gelled soap
Hot Process Soap
With hot process soap making, you cook the soap. This can be done in many different ways, to include using a crock pot. Because you are adding heat to the process, you are speeding up the saponification processes. But, just like cold process soap, there are both pros and cons. Some of the benefits include:
- Faster Saponification
- Ready to use soap faster
- Harder bars, faster
Some of the cons include:
- Thicker, making it difficult to pour
- More rustic looking
- Colors can fade
- Scents can fade
- Can scorch natural additives
